“Light the Way” – Saving the South Haven Lighthouse Fundraising Campaign

First-ever Lighthouse Sit on Aug 7 – National Lighthouse Day

One of the highlights of the campaign will be the first-ever Lighthouse Sit on Aug. 7, which is National Lighthouse Day. During the event, local and state leaders will take turns sitting on the balcony of the lighthouse to raise money.

The Historical Association of South Haven, owner of the century-old lighthouse, began a soft launch earlier this year and is now kicking its fundraising campaign into full gear.
 

“Light the Way” Events

  • June 19-Aug. 29: Light the Way art exhibit, South Haven Center for the Arts, 600 Phoenix. Portion of proceeds from art sales will go to the lighthouse preservation campaign.
  •  

  • Tuesday, Aug. 4: “Ladies of the Light” historical program, 7-9 p.m. Listen as speaker Dianna Stampfler recounts the lives of female lightkeepers dating back to the early 1840s, Lighthouse Keepers House, 91 Michigan Ave., South Haven.
  •  

  • Friday, Aug. 7: Light the Way Lighthouse Sit, 7 a.m.-sunset. Watch as legislative and community leaders take turns sitting on the Lighthouse balcony to raise funds for preserving our famous beacon.
  •  

  • Friday-Saturday, Oct. 30-31: “Michigan’s Ghostly Beacons” historical program, Michigan Maritime Museum, 260 Dyckman Ave. Listen as speaker Dianna Stampfler tells about the nearly two dozen lighthouses in Michigan reported to be haunted. Diane will present her program at 6 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday.

  • Purchase one of our chapbooks that highlights local poetry, short stories and artwork focusing on the lighthouse.
  • Join us Aug. 7 to celebrate National Lighthouse Day by donating funds for government and community leaders as they spend 48 hours at the top of our lighthouse tower as part of the first-ever Lighthouse Sit.

Join the Historical Association of South Haven for an evening that includes hors d’ oeuvres, dinner, the debut of a St. Julian wine label commemorating our famous lighthouse, a silent auction of maritime memorabilia, the unveiling of our historic lighthouse chapbook, video presentation and more.

Tickets for the event are $50 minimum donation per person and can be purchased by sending a check to:

Lighthouse Contest – Create a work about our South Haven Lighthouse Heritage. You could win fame and a $100 Prize!

lighthouse-emailnewsThe Historical Association of South Haven (HASH) is sponsoring a poetry, vignettes, and art images contest to support "Save the Light," the South Haven lighthouse restoration project. Items submitted to this contest will be printed in a chapbook entitled, Lighting our Harbor, Preserving our Past.
One winner will be chosen to receive a $100 prize.

Submission: Deliver or mail two final copies of your piece/s. Prepare one copy with your name and contact information, and one copy without your name for the judges. All pieces must be about some aspect of the South Haven Lighthouse, but could extend to subjects like fishing on the pier, the lighthouse keepers, etc.

Works may be submitted electronically to: thirstypoet@gmail.com. However, to qualify the entry fee must be mailed to the address below.

Fee: Entry fee is $5 for up to two entries. Checks should be made out to HASH. By submitting work, artists agree that their work/s may be published in the chapbook for no remuneration. The chapbooks will be sold as part of the fundraiser. Author credit will be given to each published piece and the author will retain rights to his/her work beyond this use.

Due Date: Entries must be received by March 23, 2015.

Prize: The contest will be judged by language and art educators, and the top twenty-five works will be selected for publication. The winning entry will receive $100, one copy of the chapbook and two tickets to the “fundraising kickoff” at The South Haven Yacht Club May 7th. The winner will share his/her work with the audience as a highlight of the event. Creators of the runner-up entries will also be recognized at the kickoff.

Thursday, Feb 26th at 5:30pm – Our Lighthouse… Our Heritage

Our Lighthouse… Our Heritage: The Need for Preserving South Haven’s Most Notable Landmark.

You are invited to attend a Lighthouse Campaign Preview on Thursday, February 26 at the Historical Association of South Haven’s museum, 355 Hubbard Street in South Haven. Appetizers/drinks at 5:30 and the meeting will begin at 6:00 pm. This warm community get-together is open to all.

The program will open with a meet and greet, featuring hors d’oeuvres prepared by local caterer Suzie Blair and wine. A video presentation, created by retired radio broadcaster Dick Brunvand, will then follow along with a presentation about fundraising efforts.

The Historical Association of South Haven owns the Lighthouse located on the South pierhead at South Haven and is proceeding to do extensive repairs to both the interior and exterior.

Don’t forget to donate to our project to complete the preservation of our Lighthouse. If everyone gave a little we could get the job done.
